The February workshop was such a success and received such rave reviews, Batik artist Voonbin Pettit will be back for a repeat workshop in March. Don't miss it!
Origin of Batik:
Originating from the island of Java, Batik is a traditional fabric dyeing technique using a tool called tjanting (canting) or a tjap (cap) printing block to apply hot wax in elaborate patterns. The wax serves as a barrier, preventing dye from reaching certain areas of the fabric. Celebrated for its artistic and cultural significance, especially in Indonesia and Malaysia, Batik adorns traditional attire and plays a role in various ceremonial contexts. It is recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. (see additional photos at the bottom of the event page)
How The Arthaus and Voonbin Collaboration Was Born:
Late last year I attended this very workshop in Fremont and was so impressed by the quality of instruction and the instructors knowledgeable, warm and engaging style that I invited her to share this beautiful art at my studio.
Artist Bio:
Voonbin Leow is a textile designer from Malaysia with a vibrant style emphasizing bright colors and multicultural patterns from around the world. After completing her thesis project at the Academy of Art University with work featured in Vogue Runway and GMARO, she traveled home to Malaysia and rediscovered her love for the art of batik.
